Speaker is a much more "intellectual" book, if that makes any sense. It's less about Ender being a badass, and more about actually dealing with Alien Life. Read them, it's worth it. As far as the Shadow series

There are three possible sequels they could have done: Speaker for the Dead and the rest of the Ender series, Ender in Exile, and Ender's Shadow. They could have done Speaker for the Dead/Ender in Exile - up until the final scene.
