1.17 is terrible for optimisation, hopefully they fix it in 1.18. From what I’ve seen, without optifine, the latest 1.18 snapshot runs twice as smooth compared to 1.17.1 (with optifine). They’re hugely improving optimisation because of how large the world is getting, it can only get better.

This mod has several options which can change the rendering distance in the game, so it is also something which you can use to get rid of the fog effect in Minecraft 1.18.
